It was Monday morning, and I was driving the kids to school. I had just returned from a conference with amazing doctors from all over the country, learning and sharing information in the functional medicine and wellness space. I was going to be heading back out on Tuesday to another conference – this one in the personal growth category. I usually attend conferences and seminars 5 to 6 times a year. These two happen to be in consecutive weeks.

My son Kaeran asked, “Daddy, why do you go on all these trips”?

I thought about it for a minute, and answered, “I just want to be the best that I can be at the things that are important to me.” Being the best practitioner I can be. The best leader I can be. The best example I can be to my boys.

Attending these trainings and events affords me two major benefits. The first is the opportunity to network with other individuals that are also trying to be the best they can be. These people are typically the type that are more than willing to share their wisdom and help others as well. It has been said that we become the 5 people we hang out with most. It’s important that we spend time with and have connection with people who understand and support us in our purpose – our tribe.

The second benefit is the advantage of having mentors.

When I think back in my life I realize I’ve had mentors almost continuous from the beginning. Like most, my parents were my first mentors. They helped mold us into the best versions of ourselves – as best they could.

Like most, I went to school and was mentored by many teachers from grade to high school. I had soccer and hockey coaches that shared their experience and wisdom with me so that I could play and compete at my best level.

Over the last 30 years of my professional career, I’ve had the opportunity to study with amazing doctors and leaders in the wellness industry.

I can think of one span in my life when I did not have a mentor or training program that I was involved with. As I wrote this article I realized those were the darkest years of my life.

Training and mentoring is a normal part of life for me and my team at Monadnock Natural Health. I am convinced that everyone needs a coach or mentor to help them be the best they can be.
